Our Safety Focus

Our Safety Focus

We strive for every employee to return home as safely as they arrived for work. It’s our goal and daily mission that Nobody Gets Hurt!

We extend our passion for safety to every aspect of our work. Safety is interwoven into our culture and daily practices and drives the development of impeccable work practices.

Our Safety Culture
Safety is at the core of the way we observe, communicate, and investigate behavior. We follow a daily safety management system of leading and lagging indicators, including coaching observation trends, work site audits, good catch and near miss reports, corrective action follow-ups, total recordable incident rates, days away, and restricted duty and transfers. With these indicators, we perform trend analysis and program validation of safety performance. Should an incident occur, we quickly identify the root causes and develop corrective practices. This vigilant evaluation and implementation of company and industry-wide best practices ensures we maintain the absolute highest safety standards to protect our workers, our clients, and the community. We aim to be the safest contractor in the markets we serve.

Results

HMG utilizes the DuPont Bradley Curve to measure progress on the path to world-class safety. Initially ranked as above average in the execution of safety management, we have moved progressively toward a mature safety culture, with a team commitment and belief that safety is truly sustainable, and zero injury performance is attainable.

We have been recognized with an E.I. DuPont Safety Excellence Award. Between 2008 and 2019, our employee injury rates have decreased steadily. At 1.07, our enterprise-wide 2020 OSH Recordable Rate is significantly lower than the industry average.

In April 2016, DuPont Sustainable Solutions conducted a safety perception survey with more than 3,500 employees. This marked our third employee safety perception survey performed since we began our safety journey. Our participation rate ranks among the highest of all companies surveyed by DuPont. Data show we are above average in the execution of our safety management systems (vs. industry peers).

An Industry Leader

Powering Safety To New HeightsIn 2004, we joined the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the IBEW, industry groups (EEI, NECA) and several other contractors in founding the ET&D Strategic Partnership – one of only a few strategic partnerships between employers and OSHA. The Partnership's goal is to reduce worker fatalities, injuries and illnesses in the electric line construction industry.

The Partnership is a huge success and membership has grown to include approximately 80 percent of the electrical transmission and distribution industry. As a result of the Partnership, the industry implemented an OSHA approved T&D 10-hour training program for electrical power employees and a Supervisory Leadership Program known as the ET&D 20-Hour Program. We train all supervisors and managers (in all lines of business) on this program.

Additionally, the Partnership has established many best practices focusing on:

  • Administrative controls
  • Job briefings
  • Qualified observer
  • Pre-use inspection of rubber protective equipment
  • Insulate & isolate safety performance check
  • Cradle-to-cradle use of insulating rubber gloves and sleeves
  • Rubber insulating PPE for the live line tool method on distribution lines
  • Lock-to-lock use of insulating rubber gloves and sleeves
  • 100% fall protection when performing aerial work on wood poles
  • 100% fall protection when performing aerial work on lattice structures
